Our insect of the week for November 3, 2025 is the Northern Pearly Eye, Lethe anthedon [LEPIDOPTERA: Nymphalidae]. This butterfly is often observed in central Illinois during warmer months. It was originally described by the American Zoologist, Austin Clark in 1936 (less than a century ago).

Adults of this species feed on sap, dung, fungi and carrion (not exactly a pollinator) as adults. Larvae often feed on sedges (Carex species).

This species prefers moist, forested habitats. Adults ae often observed in the woods near streams and marshes. Unlike many butterfly species, this species overwinters in the larval stage (often the third or fourth instar).

Because it prefers moist woodlands with understory plants for the larvae, the range of this species in central Illinois is very fragmented these days.

The adult butterfly in this photo was collected by Frank Hitchell in Peoria County, Illinois.
