Our insect of the week for May 18, 2026 is Patrobus longicornis [COLEOPTERA: Carabidae]. This species was described in 1823 by the American entomologist, Thomas Say.

Adults are often attracted to lights at night. They are also found in wetter habitats (near the edges of streams and ponds). This species is most often found in northeastern North America.

Not a great deal is known about this species (including larval food; it is presumed to be a predator of other insects).

The specimen in this photograph was collected and photographed by Mark DuBois in Peoria County, Illinois.
