Our insect of the week (March 31, 2025) is the owlfly, Ululodes macleayanus [NEUROPTERA: Ascalaphidae]. This species was first described in 1823. It is found in North, Central, and South America. Adults are easily recognized by their knobbed antennae and bulging eyes. They are ambush predators of other insects. Larvae are also predators. Adults are often active at twilight hours (hence the origin of their common name).

The specimen shown in this photograph was collected by our former member, Gordon Adams, in Peoria County [June, 1964].
